Brough to Crabley Farm. From the car park by the River Humber via the Humber Yawl club – west to Crabley Farm and back again is a pleasant evening stroll along the embankment. You have good views of the Wolds to the north and the River Humber to the south.
From Broomfleet to Thornton Lands – also follows the embankment, but you are not always on it, thanks to a ridiculous prohibition, backed up by barbed wire, from Associated British Ports. Broomfleet is an attractive village, well worth a visit. St Mary’s is a 19th Century church with a small manual-only pipe organ, made in Hull, and some lovely Victorian stained glass. It looks well cared-for inside and out. Broomfleet also has some interesting old houses.
The main highlight of this walk is the Weighton Lock, through which traffic along the Market Weighton Canal gets access to the Humber. The was first built in 1773 and has been maintained and upgraded since then. The Lock was awarded Grade 2 listing in 1987. The lock gates are huge, to accommodate the massive tidal reach. It is something special and well worth a visit.
